Miss Moxy (feature film)

Feature length animation – Duration: 85 min – Genre: family, roadmovie

Miss Moxy is a roadmovie about the urban and a bit arrogant cat Miss Moxy, who decides to go home again, after being taken on a vacation to the French countryside by her owner and his family. This is the start of a long journey where she becomes friends with a dog and an old swallow, who will accompany her during her adventurous trip home. Miss Moxy has to learn how to rely on her animal instinct. Something she has not done for a very long time…

Art Direction

Miss Moxy was an co-production between Fabrique Fantastique, Capibara, and Polder Animation. Polder Animation was responsible for the overall art direction/production design, 3D character sculpting/modeling and character rigging.

As a studio, we were involved from the very beginning, initiating the earliest stages of development. We handled the pre-preproduction work and developed the overall 3D style that shaped the film’s look and feel.

Our team modeled all 66 characters featured in the film. For the main characters, we also handled the texturing, rigging, and grooming in-house, ensuring a high level of consistency and quality throughout.

In addition, we used our proprietary rigging tools and pipeline for the creation af all character rigs in the film. We implemented this pipeline at animation studio Capybara for the creation of the remaining characters.

At Polder Animation, our character modeling process begins by carefully translating the essence of the 2D design into a rough 3D sculpt. We focus on capturing the character’s personality, proportions, and silhouette, ensuring that the spirit of the original drawing carries through into the 3D version.

In close collaboration with the directors, we refine the sculpt in stages, gradually adding detail and definition. Once the final sculpt is approved, we rebuild the model with clean, animation-ready topology, fully optimized for rigging and production.

Character Rigging

Miss Moxy featured a large cast of 66 humans and animals. To make this possible within the tight budget, we relied on our proprietary rigging tools and over a decade of character animation experience to streamline the rigging process without sacrificing quality.

Our rigging workflow already begins during the modeling phase. Specialized tools allow modeling artists to generate in real time parts of the face, optimized for rigging, like the mouth and eyelids. As well these tools allow to instantly see how expressions and eyelid movement will look, even before rigging begins. All together saving time and reducing the chance of costly revisions later on.

We developed a modular rigging system. That means that prebuild body parts like arms, legs, spines and heads can be used across all characters, human or animal. These modules can be dynamically adjusted to fit any design and even updated across multiple characters with a single click, even if they’re already being animated.

Thanks to this efficient and flexible pipeline, we were able to deliver high-quality, animation-fliendly characters at scale, all while staying within budget.
